Dog Chews on Artist’s Displeasing Artwork

Animal portrait painting is, not unlike human portraiture except that animals rarely like to pose. It takes hard work for an artist to capture an animal’s attention. A female artist of Wilmington has specialized in this. She is a member of the famous

Delaware family. Her grandfather painted a famous collection of sea and landscape artwork. It is not shocking then to learn that the painter in this female artist came out at the age of 3.  Animals were what she drew most of the time. After a one man show she had at the local library at age 10, she began illustrating books for children at age 12.

She studied all types of dancing with all widely known Philadelphia teachers. She was an incredible dancer and danced solo performances, including one convincing death scene, for many years.  In painting, dogs are her main interest, although she does portraits of many kinds of animals.

The way she starts working on a dog’s portrait sparks interest. She does as many sketches of the dog as she can while the owner keeps the dog still.  The pencil seems to jump as she makes sketches on her sketchpad in an effort to find a pose that would best suit the dog. In the meantime she is constantly talking to the dog, telling him how beautiful he is, what a good dog and so forth.

She uses props of all shapes and sizes to maintain the animal’s interest. She requests for the photographs of the dog that the owner has and then asks if it’s okay for her to duplicate any of them for her collection. By cutting out small tufts of hair from the dog’s tail, ears, and tummy, she can find out the colors to use. The snips are kept under the dog’s file.

Afterwards, she concerns herself with the pose of the dog and the composition with a suitable background. The latter is chosen based from the type of dog or animal. She sat in a duck blind and took sketches of her surroundings for one portrait featuring a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Dogs already have their own views, just like people, she observed. Trying to prove himself a connoisseur, an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and practically mangled her worst painting. The painting must have been terrible if the dog did that and had to be given large doses of medication after.

If the portrait features a beagle or a basset, she includes a paw print in the scenery and puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back. With her dog to aid her, she even made abstract backgrounds. Animals don’t frequently show cooperation. Painting was put to end for the day when one of the models ran off with a female dog. Natural this may be, but it would seem that the unusual can always be expected when painting an animal’s portrait.
